For over 40 years, Bobby Tambling was to Chelsea what Ian Rush is to Liverpool, Bobby Charlton to Manchester United, Dixie Dean to Everton and Jimmy Greaves to Tottenham Hotspur.

The man who describes himself as “the old banger compared to the
Rolls Royce that was Greaves”, stood alone as the club’s all-time
leading scorer, netting 202 goals for the Blues from only 370
appearances.

However, after leaving Stamford Bridge in 1970, Bobby exiled himself
from the club for many years and was known as “little more than a
name in the matchday programme” to most supporters. That is, until
Frank Lampard began to close in on his record while Bobby lay stricken
in a hospital bed amidst a two-year battle for his life.

As Lampard became the new name atop the list of Chelsea’s most
prolific goalscorers, Bobby may have lost his record but he gained a
whole host of new fans who suddenly wished to learn more
about the man whose name they had read for so many years
alongside a prominent statistic.

It was during his battle against illness that Bobby began to pen his
life story. Starting with his humble beginnings in Hayling Island, Goals
in Life covers every aspect of Bobby’s spectacular Chelsea career
and beyond. From shining brightest among Tommy Docherty’s
Diamonds at Stamford Bridge to sharing a dressing room with
George Best in Ireland, Bobby lifts the lid on life on the King’s Road,
including one of the most explosive stories in the history of
Chelsea Football Club: the infamous Blackpool Incident which
resulted in the break-up of one of the most beloved sides in the
club’s history.

The foreword for the book was written by Lampard, whose
friendship with Bobby grew with each strike which rippled the back
of the net. You know all about one of the men to have surpassed 200
goals for the Blues – now find out all about the other in Bobby Tambling: Goals in Life.
