STEVE NICOL is a Liverpool Football Club legend. Brave, skillful and with a winner’s mentality, his amazing versatility made him a manager’s dream. He played under Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish during the club’s greatest era, lifting trophies alongside a host of Anfield greats. His love of a packet or three of crisps didn’t affect his appetite for success.

In more ways than one, Nicol broke the mould. He hit the headlines for having giant feet and by his own admission could act a bit daft. Fellow Scots Hansen, Dalglish and Souness famously made their naive, younger teammate a target for wind-ups.

They made him wait at a motorway service station on a Sunday morning for a boot deal meeting that didn’t exist…They forced him out of a car to check faulty windscreen wipers then drove off and left him in the snow…When they saw a teddy bear in his bag on an away trip abroad, the stick he got was merciless.

It was all part of the dressing room camaraderie that made Liverpool great. When tragedy struck in 1989, that special Kop spirit was tested to the limit.

Stevie Nicol: 5 League Titles and a Packet of Crisps is the entertaining autobiography of a Liverpool and Scotland hero who is one of the game’s real characters.
